The Lucky Luke books are beautifully written. The stories are engaging and hold interest with short chapters and interesting illustrations. The book handles the subjects of hunting and fishing well. The stories keep readers’ interest and work in proper safety at the same time. I appreciated the care given to the family relationships and the values displayed.

Elementary reading program ideas

Elementary reading program ideas

There are five unique reasons for including an outdoors speaker in your elementary school reading program for this year. First off, kids love to talk and hear about animals and nature. It sparks their curiosity and when they can connect with the outdoors they tend to listen and learn with greater ease.

Second, today’s kids need action and a fast paced transition. Bringing in an outdoor enthusiast that has a speaking style that engages the kids will have the students beaming with excitement.  The kids will feel like they are part of the presentation and will be fired up and entertained.

Third, kids love adventure. Bringing in a speaker that has climbed to the top of mountains looking for elk, or who has spent seven days in a small tent in the middle of Alaska, will spark a million questions with the kids. These questions will promote a learning experience that is priceless.

Fourth, kids love to hear about outdoor opportunities that they can get involved with. Make sure that the outdoor speaker that you bring in will explain to the kids what things their community has to offer. Kids love to hear what they can do in their local parks and the community education programs that are available. Most communities have outdoor camping, adventure camps, and nature days. The more they know, the more they will get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

Finally, after the speaker leaves the teachers can continue with the outdoor excitement in the classroom. Having the kids write and talk about what they learned will continue the learning process in a fun and exciting way for the kids. Take the momentum and have fun reading, writing and telling stories about the outdoors.

Bringing in an outdoor enthusiast to your school is a fun way to promote reading, writing and the outdoors.

How to make hunting fun for kids

How to make hunting fun for kids

There is something special about introducing a youngster to hunting. Getting kids fired up about hunting begins the moment you start talking about it. Ask many leading questions, such as “What do you think it will be like when a turkey walks in?” or “How much do you think you can move before a deer sees you”? Another fun way to get kids excited about hunting is to tell them fun stores of past hunts, or have other kids share their adventures with them.

The night before a hunt is a good time to go over the hunting details. It will help your youngster to feel more prepared and a part of the hunt. Let the new hunter know where you are going to go in the morning and why. Explain the strategies of playing the wind for deer or playing the set up for turkeys. Help the new hunter get their hunting clothes spread out the night before. That will be one less thing to worry about during the next morning’s excitement.

When it’s time to head out, try to remain calm and positive and reinforce the excitement with the new hunter. If you’re anything like me, a few mishaps will happen and taking them in stride, with a positive attitude, will go a long way. Kids pick up on your anxiety and that can discourage them. If a hat gets left behind, don’t make a big deal about it. Simply make the best of the situation and remind yourself, and the young hunter, that going back once or twice to get something is not a big deal. Remember that it’s hunting and is supposed to be fun.

When you are in the field with the new hunter you have to play on the child's patience. If you’re not seeing deer and your new hunter is bored in an hour, maybe it’s time to call it a day and not push it. Even though you might know just a little more time could be all you need. Don’t worry, and remember it’s supposed to be fun for the new hunter. There will be other days.

The main thing to keep reminding yourself is that the adventure is for the new hunter. Even though you want it to be great, the big moment might not happen until you and your hunter have gone out a few times.  Easing kids into the outdoors is okay and with some luck they will eventually have that awesome hunt you’re hoping for.

Why I Present

Why I Present

I often get asked why I go into schools and stand in front of hundreds of elementary kids. My answer is easy, I love the kids!

I start off by educating them on the steps it takes to get a book published. While explaining the process, I get to highlight the team of talented people it takes to get the job done. The kids are usually surprised to find out just how many people it takes to publish a book. From the illustrators to the designers it fun to build curiosity about the different skills.

The next step is explaining where my story ideas come from. All my books are based on true adventures and telling those stories is one of my highlights. I want the kids to feel the excitement of climbing a mountain in Colorado and seeing a bull elk at the top.  Or, having a northern pike jump out of the water with your lure stuck in its mouth. I believe, firing the kids up about the outdoors is important. I want them to get outside and enjoy the healthy fun our wilderness and lakes have to offer.

I always include the Famous Animal Sound Challenge in my presentations. I bring a bunch of hunting calls and let the kids guess what animals make the sound. I follow up their guesses with live video of the animal. This has proven to be a huge hit with the kids and adults. Animals are amazing and seeing them make their sounds, live in the wild, is very cool.

Finally, the question and answer session at the end shows that the kids really love the outdoors and the book writing process. The questions go on and on and I am thrilled to do my best to answer each and every one of them.

So why do I love going into schools and standing in front of hundreds of elementary kids? It’s the kids. I love sparking their curiosity about the team it takes to publish a book. The excitement in their eyes when they get to hear a bull elk bugle for the first time. The girl who asks how she can get her first book published. Kids are fantastic and educating, entertaining and inspiring them is a mission I love.

Contact me today and let’s fire your kids up.

Getting kids to read more

Getting kids to read more

How do you get kids to put down their electronics and pick up a book? It’s not easy. Studies are showing that kids, at an alarming rate, are not reading books. Electronics are stealing the spotlight and we have to work hard to educate and inspire our kids as to the benefits of reading a book.

Here are some interesting facts:

· A University of California, Berkeley study showed that reading a book exposed readers to 50 percent more words that prime time TV, or even a conversation between college graduates.

· Scientific studies have shown that people who read books are more understanding, empathetic and better in complex social relationships. (I want my kids to have all those)

· A Sussex University study showed that reading may reduce stress by as much as 68 percent. (good for kids and us adults)

· A Mayo Clinic study showed that screen time (e-book, TV, computer) at night will keep you up longer and even hurt your sleep.

· 75 percent of parents wish their children would read more for fun. A Scholastic reports suggests that reading out loud to kids throughout their elementary years increased reading levels. More than 40 percent of frequent reader’s ages six through ten were read to out loud at home, but only 13 percent of those who did not read often for fun were.

· A study of 17,000 people tracked over several years linked reading for pleasure, at least once per week, between the ages of 10 and 16 to greater intellectual progress, in vocabulary, spelling and mathematics. As adults, we understand the statistics. The challenge is to get the kids to buy in and pick up a book.

One important step is helping kids find books that they love, not like, love. The more interested they are, the more willing they will be to continue reading and the more likely to pick up the next book. Search and explore with your kids to find new and exciting books for them to read. And remember, it’s not just for fun, it’s proven to help them in countless ways.

(The author’s mission is to connect with elementary age kids to inspire them to Read, Write and Enjoy the Outdoors. Using his love for the outdoors, one of a kid book series and a unique western twist, he has fired up thousands of kids.) Kevin Lovegreen
