I met an inspiring author yesterday that created a fantastic hunting themed book series called Little Jake. His mission is to introduce all kids to the amazing world of hunting and fishing. While talking with him a couple things became clear about the challenges he has been facing. The kids that read his books love them and show more interest in the outdoors after reading them. The hard part is getting the world to know about the books.
What was one of the biggest challenges to the author of Little Jake? Getting adults that already know how amazing and healthy hunting and fishing is, to pass the word on. Setting a great example is the Whitetail Unlimited group in Nebraska. They buy kids hunting and fishing books and donate them to their local schools and libraries. The writers of outdoor children’s books need help inspiring kids and that starts by buying the books. The author of Little Jake said he knows everyone is busy, so you can’t expect them to help spread the word. I believe the hunting community will take the time to help inspire other families to realize how fun, exciting and healthy hunting and fishing is. They possibly didn’t realize how important their help is.
Buy a book for your kids and when they are done, pass that book on to a neighbor kid who might not realize how much they enjoy reading about the outdoors. Buy a couple and donate them to your local elementary school library. Buy one for each of your kid’s friend’s birthday parties. Buy one and donate it to the next fundraising event your passionate about.
Together, one book at a time, we can change the statistics and feel good about doing our part.
Be great today!
