My daughter would smile and jump up and down when a sunfish grabbed onto her worm at the end of her snoopy rod. She pulled that fish in and then it was my job to get the fish off and put another worm on. That strategy continued for years and I loved helping her. After she turned twelve, she became fairly self sufficient when it came to baiting her hook and taking her fish off. There was still plenty of times when the line came swinging over to me with a wriggling fish on it. She would simply smile and end with a thoughtful “thank you” after I plopped it back in the water or in the bucket.
I have found from introducing many of my daughter’s friends to fishing, they enjoy fishing very much, but when it comes to worms, baiting the hook and taking the fish off the hooks, that’s not their cup of tea. I have grown to appreciate and get a kick out of the fact that I am needed a little more when I am fishing with girls. I have always encouraged my daughter and the other girls to bait their hooks and to take their own fish off and many times they do. I just haven’t found many girls that really enjoy doing it, so I end up helping out. I keep reminding myself, the key is to get them to enjoy fishing and the main part of that, is having a line in the water and having fun.
If we want to get more girls out fishing we could simply appreciate the fact that they may need a little more attention than most boys do, and enjoy that. One other thing I have found out about girls, fishing and boats; they love music. There have been many times out on the pontoon when three or four girls are all singing along to a Taylor Swift song as a crappie is being pulled in. It’s those moments that I have learned to enjoy and appreciate the difference between boys and girls. As long as we remember that it’s more important to spend time with our daughters fishing, than it is to worry about how we are fishing, it’s a win. I know sometimes that’s a tuff one for us dads, but we can do it.
Let’s get those girls out on the water!
